The Yakovlev Yak-52 is a two-seat aerobatic trainer devleoped in the Soviet Union in the 1970's. The aircraft is powered by a 9 cylinder, 360hp, radial Vedeneyev M-14P engine which drives a 2 or 3 bladed propeler.. The Yak-52 is stressed to +7/-5g and capable of all the manouevers in the aresti catalogue. One of the unusual characteristics of the Yak-52 is the pneumatic system. The landing gear, flaps, engine starting and braking/steering are all air operated by air from the pneumatic system. Although the landing gear retracts, by design it does not retract flush with the aircraft and the wheel protrude underneath the aircraft when raised. The idea being that in the event of the aircraft having to land with the undercarriage raised, the wheels will still rotate and provide a degree of protection.
