G-XYAK
G-XYAK (Serial Number 899413) was manufactured in 1989 by Intreprinderea De Avioane, Bacau, Romania. The aircraft was allocated a UK registration in 2003 and registered as G-XYAK (although the aircraft had operated in the UK for several years under previous registrations). The aircraft was initially registered in the Soviet Union as 25/Yellow to the DOSAAF (Voluntary Society of Assistance to the Army, the Air Force and the Navy). The aircraft was then registered as LY-AFX (Lithuania), and is known to have operated in the UK in 1998 and 1999. It was subsequently registered RA-44469 (69/Blue) and the '69' on the side of the fuselage today is a carry-over from the previous registration.

The aircraft is a standard, basic, Yak-52 with no lights or stall warner. The original Soviet ADF equipment has been removed from the aircraft and so the only aid to the traditional 'eye and map' navigation, is the fitting of a Skywatch GPS in the front cockpit. The rear cockpit remains standard, with the instructors override switchs that simulate various failures in the front cockpit, locked in the 'Off' position.

The only other modification to the aircraft is the oil drain valve visible in the lower engiine cowling by the starboard exhaust pipe. This modification is designed to help prevent excess oil pooling in the lower engine cylinders. The valve is left open after flight to allow oil to escape. This necessitates some 'capture' device to receive the oil that drains during the time the aircraft is parked. So as well as the normal exhaust covers that capture any oil that might leak from the bottom cyclinders through the exhaust pipes, XYAK also sports a homemade plastic pipe that connects to the oil drain valve when parked.
